The Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) concluded the proceedings of its 2025 first ordinary session on Saturday, 31st May 2025, in Abuja, Nigeria.
In addition to the presentation of country reports and committee meetings , the debates focused on amending the rule of procedures , holding an interactive session with the Auditor-General of ECOWAS institutions and a representative of the President of the ECOWAS Investment and Development Bank (EBID), the presentation of the report on the state of the Community by the President of the ECOWAS Commission, as well as the launch of commemorative activities marking the 25th anniversary of the ECOWAS Parliament.
Rule of procedures amended
The parliamentarians amended the rule of procedures to adapt procedures to current realities. These amendments seek to enhance the efficiency of parliamentary work and improve transparency in decision-making.
Interactive session with the Auditor-General and the EBID
An interactive session brought together members of Parliament, the Auditor-General of ECOWAS institutions, and a representative of the EBID President. Discussions centered on sound financial governance, the fight against corruption, and the optimization of funds allocated to development projects. The parliamentarians emphasized the need for rigorous oversight to ensure the efficient use of community resources.
Report on the state of the Community
The President of the ECOWAS Commission presented a general report on the state of the Community, addressing security crises, political transitions, and socio-economic prospects. He called for greater solidarity among member states to tackle regional challenges.
Launch of the 25th Anniversary Celebrations
Launching the commemoration of the silver jubilee of the ECOWAS Parliament in the context of the celebration of a double anniversary, the 50th anniversary of ECOWAS and the 25th anniversary of its Parliament, the Speaker of the Parliament paid heartfelt tribute to the founding fathers for their vision of a united West Africa, while underscoring the pivotal role of the Community Parliament as an instrument of dialogue and regional integration.
This parliamentary session reaffirmed the Parliament’s commitment to strengthening its institutional foundations and fostering harmonious development in West Africa.
