Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament Calls for Regional Solidarity

The Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Her Excellency Hadja Mémounatou Ibrahima, inaugurated the 2025 first ordinary session of the Community Parliament on Tuesday, 20 May 2025, in Abuja, Nigeria.

In her address, she expressed gratitude to the Nigerian authorities, particularly His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for their unwavering support to the Parliament.

She welcomed the presence of representatives from other ECOWAS institutions, commending their collaboration and commitment to regional integration.

The Speaker highlighted the Parliament’s recent activities, including joint committee meetings on strategic issues such as the implications of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger’s withdrawal from ECOWAS, as well as challenges in air transport.
She also noted the Parliament’s participation in international forums to promote peace and solidarity.

In 2025, ECOWAS marks its 50th anniversary, while the Parliament celebrates its 25th. The Speaker paid tribute to the founding fathers for their vision of a united West Africa and emphasized the Parliament’s crucial role as a platform for dialogue and regional integration.

She stressed the need to rethink the integration model, enhance citizen engagement, and foster hope despite current challenges.

Before officially launching the celebrations for the ECOWAS Parliament’s 25th anniversary, the Speaker called for unity and perseverance, honoring the legacy of the founding fathers to build an inclusive and cohesive West Africa where people live in peace and harmony
